2021 Water Rates
In early 2020 UBID commissioned its state of the art water plant which provides water which greatly exceeds Island Health standards. This plant is much more sophisticated than the previous “chlorination only” plant. As a result the costs of operating the plant, and our rates, have increased because of:
– additional materials required to treat the water
– additional staff to monitor the operation of the plant
– increased certification requirements resulting in higher training and labour costs
– disposal costs of organic and added materials removed from the water
Building the plant required significant capital funding. This funding was raised by placing a mortgage on the plant. The mortgage is being paid by the increase in parcel taxes experienced this year.
